BOLD & GOLD is seeking a motivated, organized, and flexible Partnership Program Director who shares our commitment to the outdoors, youth development, community building, and cultural humility. The primary responsibilities of this role are the implementation of single-day and overnight outdoor programs including backpacking, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, and snowshoeing.
About BOLD & GOLD
Boys Outdoor Leadership Development (BOLD) & Girls Outdoor Leadership Development (GOLD) is dedicated to inspiring courage and confidence in diverse groups of youth through outdoor adventures. As a program of the Camping & Outdoor Leadership branch of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, BOLD & GOLD offers year-round partnership programs and summer expedition experiences. Partnership programs engage with schools, non-profits, and community-based organizations to design and implement transformative outdoor experiences. The summer expedition program primarily runs single-gender expeditions that engage youth through backcountry trips ranging in length from 5 to 22 days. BOLD & GOLD experiences take place in Mt Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park, Olympic National Park, National Forests, Washington State Parks, and local green spaces. Activities include backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing, fishing, yoga, art, music, and literature.
The goal of BOLD & GOLD is to increase confidence, courage, emotional intelligence, wonder, and community awareness in our participants. BOLD & GOLD believes these traits are the foundations of leadership and works to inspire participants to develop their own leadership style. Responsibilities
What you'll be doing
- Oversee development and implementation of outdoor expedition programming.
- Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and supervise assigned staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Provide development and leadership.
- Compile program statistics and provide data and reports as required. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program(s).
- Provide leadership and support for branch management team, annual fundraising campaign, and volunteer committees/boards as assigned.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community-based organizations, non-profits, and schools.
- Develop, produce, and distribute program information necessary to promote programs, in accordance with marketing plans.
- Ensure that risk management procedures are followed and that all programs are in compliance with YMCA, contract, accreditation, and all relevant regulations and other applicable standards.
- Ensure high quality programs through innovative program development evaluations and ongoing training of staff.
- Ensure upkeep of related facilities and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This individual will work from the Outdoor Leadership offices at the Cascade People’s Center in the South Lake Union area of Seattle to fulfill job duties. This job operates in a both a professional office and outdoor environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. BOLD & GOLD programming takes place in remote wilderness locations (national park, national forest, state park land) across Washington State.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Employees must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs, safely travel over varied terrain (trails, tree roots, boulder/rock fields, shoreline, mud, snow, ice) up to 15 miles per day, be comfortable spending multiple days and/or weeks in a wilderness setting, communicate both verbally and non-verbally with other staff, volunteers, and participants. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time exempt position, and shifts vary based on program needs. Overnight and weekend work will be required for program implementation. This position is part of the Outdoor Leadership risk management support system and will require on-call shifts as job duties demand.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area travel may be expected. This is an Authorized Driver position, read more in the Position Requirements.
Qualifications
What we're looking for in an applicant
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant program or equivalent education or experience.
- Four years or more of related experience in outdoor program leadership with experience teaching and/or guiding outdoor programs.
- One or more years of experience with staff and volunteer supervision, program development, and budget management.
- Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and management skills.
- Experience and knowledge with youth behavior management and child abuse prevention.
- Ability to visit sites and community organizations.
- Commitment to extraordinary customer service with the ability to effectively resolve conflicts.
- Strong outdoor technical skills in one or more of the following areas: backpacking, kayaking, rock climbing, or snowshoeing.
- Current W-EMT, WFR, or WFA and CPR.
- Intermediate computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suit (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
This position requires driving:
- 21 years of age or older.
- Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards
- Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
- Maximum one minor violation
- No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Applicable certification in technical outdoor education.
- Regional knowledge of local outdoor venues and resources.
- Knowledge of legal and risk management issues related to outdoor programs.
- Experience with anti-racism practices and coalition building.
- Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical activity, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
