New York Sun Works is looking to hire a Curriculum Specialist / Teacher Trainer to deliver NY Sun Works curriculum and teaching tools to all high school teachers in our network of partner schools. This person will also be responsible for coordinating and facilitating the Urban Agriculture Certificate Program for high school students. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, flexible, professional, capable of managing their work load and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced non-profit environment.

NY Sun Works Mission

NY Sun Works is a non-profit organization that builds innovative science labs in NYC public schools. Through our Greenhouse Project Initiative we use hydroponic farming technology to educate students and teachers about the science of sustainability. We envision a generation of environmental innovators empowered to create solutions to global resource challenges.

Curriculum Specialist/Teacher Trainer will be responsible for:

  • Delivering the training program and mentor a group of partner high school teachers so they know how to use the NY Sun Works sustainability science program to enhance more comprehensive science curricula. The training program for each school includes: 
  • Two in person partner meetings per year (one in the fall and the second in the spring)
  • At least two virtual meetings in between the in person meetings (in addition to email, phone and text message correspondence)
  • Co-facilitating group Professional Learning sessions for teachers throughout the school year (in-person and virtual)
  • Coordinating and co-facilitating the Urban Agriculture Certificate Program for High School students
  • Mastering NY Sun Works curricula as it exists currently.
  • Advising partner teachers on content connections within NY Sun Works curriculum and offering ideas on implementation timelines.
  • Providing timely interaction and answering content questions via email, phone, and text message.
  • Developing positive and enriching relationships with partner teachers.
  • Traveling to partner schools (located across the 5 boroughs and Northern New Jersey).
  • Distributing curriculum access and communicating delivery dates.
  • Tracking teachers’ online usage of the curriculum.
  • Supporting annual events for teachers and the annual Discovering Sustainability Science Youth Conference.

Experience Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of teaching science at the high school level
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating teen programming
  • Bachelor degree from accredited university, Masters in Education preferred
  • Affinity for teacher training and an ability to facilitate memorable training tips/tools
  • Deep understanding of the NGSS, and extensive knowledge of how students learn
  • Experience using Google product applications or G-Suite
  • Passion for Science, Sustainability and Environmental Education and working with teachers
  • Attention to detail with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt, with strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Flexibility to jump-in and help team as needed
  • Passion for healthy eating, local food production, and urban farming
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required to be considered for this position
