This position is made for a farm hand who wants to take the next step in managing crop production and sales on this more remote 1 acre farm site. Though it feels quite rural, connecting with the local, active community, sharing food, working with youth, and supporting programming on site are all integral parts of this position. This position will be aided by part time support from the Market Lead, Sites Manager, and our summer program facilitators.

Summary

Key Details

  • Position Dates: May through August
  • Pay Rate: $16.50 - $18, DOE
  • Hours of work: Full-time. Hours fluctuate depending on seasonal demands

IMPORTANT NOTE: Positions are contingent on Canada Summer Jobs funding and may change in response to public health directives on group activities related to COVID-19. This may affect employment contracts.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Sites Manager and Good Food Farm Manager to implement a farm plan for Delta including production and sales goals
  • Ensure ongoing communication and collaboration with Sites Manager and Good Food Farm Manager throughout growing Season
  • Support Fresh Roots’ Vancouver & Coquitlam CSA programs by producing veggies to be shared across sites and communicating with appropriate program managers 
  • Ensure proper documentation of production, harvest, and sales
  • Liaise with the leadership of the Farm Roots Mini School
  • Grow and sell food in ways that foster community connections and support program goals. Specifically,
    • Support a Farm Stand and weekly market on site for the local community
    • Run a 10-12 week CSA
  • Collaborate with the Delta SOYL lead to engage and mentor SOYL youth
  • Implement Fresh Roots protocols for farm operations on the site
  • Host and support volunteers and other farm programs on site
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and irrigation systems

 

Qualifications 

  • Excitement about farming and local food systems  
  • Experience farming with 1 year applied farming skills.   
  • Able to carry out a variety of physical tasks that involve bending, squatting, lifting up to 50 lb, and repetitive motion
  • Equipped, willing, and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions  
  • Must pass a criminal record check to be able to work with children and vulnerable populations 
  • Type 5 Driver’s License ideal; experience driving large vehicles an asset
  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs Requirements: 
    • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment,
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or to whom refugee protection has been conferred, and
    • be legally entitled to work in Canada.

About Fresh Roots & Delta Farm Roots

Farm Roots is a Delta School District initiative that is currently exploring how to shift the Farm Roots Mini School program into a sustainable, integrated offering for the district. As a close partner for the last several years, Fresh Roots has an agreement with the Delta School District to lease the Farm Roots growing space for the 2022 growing season. 

Fresh Roots leads  the planning, growing, sharing and selling of food from the Farm Roots site. We  also collaborate with Delta School District to make the farm site accessible and engaging for educational programming.

In this key role, the Delta Farm Field Lead oversees the growing and sharing of food produced with the community. Through July and August this position works closely with the SOYL Delta lead to engage and mentor the SOYL youth as active participants in all aspects of growing, harvesting and sharing food.
