BCI is a fully remote organization with staff working across the United States and abroad. BCI has two main offices located in Washington, DC, and Austin, TX. The Director of Institutional Engagement can live anywhere in the United States. BCI's core hours are 10:00am to 3:00pm local time Monday through Friday. However, BCI has a flexible work schedule policy, where staff can adjust their schedules for work demands and personal needs.
Primary Responsibilities and Expectations
Reporting to the Director of Philanthropy, the Director of Institutional Engagement will be an integral member of the Development Team responsible for retaining and growing support from the current corporate, foundation, and government funders as well as developing and executing strategies to grow new institutional relationships aggressively. The Director of Institutional Engagement will be a primary contact in institutional funding relationships that support BCI’s strategic priorities and conservation work. The selected candidate will work proactively with staff across the organization to deeply understand conservation and science projects and program goals. Through the exploration and understanding of institutional funding parameters and priorities and fluency in BCI’s conservation efforts and strategies, the Director of Institutional Engagement will identify and pursue pertinent funding opportunities and shape the relationship strategies and approaches to the grant proposals - providing real-time analysis of funding opportunities, delivering compelling proposals, and leading compliance and reporting processes.
Lead efforts to research, identify, track, cultivate, and manage relationships with potential and existing institutional donors. Develop and implement strategies for their cultivation and solicitation. Keep abreast of funder interests and priorities as well as overall funding trends
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of BCI projects and goals to identify opportunities and strategies for funding, and to communicate effectively with funders and other stakeholders.
Collaborate with program staff and BCI leadership to develop funding ideas, understand funding priorities, and identify and cultivate new sources of institutional support for BCI’s programs.
Manage proposal development processes; including
Working with program staff to identify the projects that have the highest probability for funding from each specific funder
Generating compelling and competitive proposals, case statements, and letters of inquiry
Managing staff review
Effectively track and monitor all active grants and contracts from institutional funders, including
Administering institutional award documents, including applications, proposals, budgets, reports, correspondence, and pledge notices.
Working with the Operations Team to effectively administer the spend out of awards received and continually monitor the reporting process in relation to this activity.
Ensuring proper documentation is provided to donors on a timely basis, including programmatic reports and promotional materials
Collaborating with the Communications Department to ensure stewardship activities and donor recognition are planned and implemented in a timely manner
Monitoring and communicating program and project results/outcomes and fulfillment of grant commitments
Develop meaningful and compelling engagement opportunities for institutional supporters, connecting them to our mission and impact.
Maintain the grants submission and reporting calendar and workflow, monitor deadlines, and acknowledge institutional support, utilizing Raiser’s Edge NXT opportunity and action tracking.
Ascertain the risk and potential reward of grant opportunities to evaluate the likelihood of success against the investment of resources required; advise which opportunities to pursue.
Coordinate and participate in visits (virtual or in person where appropriate) with current and prospective foundation, corporate, and government funders. Conduct appropriate follow-up and determine next steps.
Keep abreast of policies and events that may impact funder priorities; monitor trends in grant-making from foundation and government entities.
Cultivate a culture of philanthropy within the organization to engage supporters, grow brand awareness and increase contributions
Assist in developing the annual operating budget to include projecting funding sources, timelines, funding amounts and funding probabilities for identified BCI programs.
Manage contract grant writer. Define deliverables, strategize on outcome delivery, and oversee progress and budget
Produce progress reports for management and board review.
Support the Chief Marketing Officer in executing deliverables based on the marketing strategic plan and in the preparation of presentations for BCI board meetings.
Assist as necessary with preparations and follow-through for the annual independent audit.
Perform other duties as assigned
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required Knowledge/Experience
Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
At least 5 years of grant writing experience required
At least 5 years of grants management experience is required.
Experience required in data management, monitoring fundraising metrics, and using data to guide decision-making.
Experience in budget compilation and reporting for complex organizations.
Enjoys team dynamics and demonstrates a participatory work style and superior interpersonal skills.
Discretion and ability to handle confidential information with great sensitivity.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Experience tracking grant proposals with a Customer Relationship Management system such as Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce or Tessitura
Preferred Knowledge/Experience
Five years of science or conservation-focused writing experience preferred
Demonstrated leadership ability, capable of holding big-picture goals while managing the details required to develop and execute effective funding and policy strategies.
Skills Needed
Excellent project coordination and time management skills, including setting and communicating realistic deadlines, overseeing multiple project timelines, and engaging with team members to achieve funder objectives.
The ability to listen and evolve strong collaborative relationships with a wide range of leaders internally and externally is a critical skillset.
Excellent reasoning abilities and sound judgment.
Persuasive writing skills backed by case statements, proposals, and collateral material examples.
High degree of emotional intelligence, with the ability to inspire staff members, donors, and partners toward our mission.
High standards for integrity and quality of work.
Ability to find the shared interests between our donors and our work and to translate these into long-term funding relationships
Exceptional relationship-building skills
Willingness to travel and occasionally on short notice. Travel may include accompanying funders to BCI project sites, annual staff retreats, in-person team meetings, and professional development activities.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary range starting at $95,000 annually, based on experience, paid twice a month, electronically or via check.
