As part of the Oxbow Education (OxEd) team, the Assistant Manager plays a key role in planning, development, and delivery of Oxbow’s outdoor and educational programs for preK-12th grade youth (and beyond). These include field trips (school and family groups), summer and seasonal day camps, in-school programs, activities at public events, and custom program offerings. This position involves both administrative and programmatic functions, including program facilitation and teaching as needed.

Summary

As part of the Oxbow Education (OxEd) team, the Assistant Manager plays a key role in planning, development, and delivery of Oxbow’s outdoor and educational programs for preK-12th grade youth (and beyond). These include field trips (school and family groups), summer and seasonal day camps, in-school programs, activities at public events, and custom program offerings. This position involves both administrative and programmatic functions, including program facilitation and teaching as needed.  

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Education Program Support

  • Actively contribute to the ongoing development of OxEd educational programs, including curricular enhancements, linkages to Next Generation Science Standards, and strategies to increase access to Oxbow’s youth educational programs
  • Lead year-round education programming for all ages, as needed
  • Contribute to OxEd program marketing and promotion
  • Collaborate to develop and facilitate community-responsive teacher/educator professional development workshops
  • As a key member of the OxEd team, help develop paths to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in the education sphere

Special and Custom Programs Leadership

  • With OxEd colleagues and in collaboration with community partners and teachers, the Oxbow Education Assistant Manager will lead program development and assist in community coordination for special events and custom programs
  • In addition to planning and coordination, the Assistant Manager will take a lead role in the delivery, monitoring, and promotion of Oxbow’s special and custom environmental education programming for new and existing organizational partners
  • Work collaboratively with OxEd staff and staff from other Oxbow programs (e.g., Conservation, Agriculture, Native Plants) to plan and coordinate special/custom programs across Oxbow’s branches of work

Farm Camp Programming Leadership

  • Serve as Camp Director for all sessions of Oxbow Farm Camp (currently Spring and Summer)
  • Develop, coordinate and lead camp events and daily activities for OxEd’s camp programs
  • Provide educational training, mentorship and support for camp volunteers and staff
  • Recruit, train, and direct camp instructors and volunteers
  • Communicate with parents/guardians of campers as needed
  • Assist in the summer camp enrollment process

Volunteer Coordination and Support

  • Serve as main point of contact for OxEd volunteers and interns
  • Provide educational/site training, mentorship and support for OxEd volunteers and interns
  • Coordinate with other members of the Oxbow team to facilitate volunteer events as needed
  • Help keep records of volunteer hours and assist in tracking, reporting and verification

Administrative/Other

  • Working closely with the Education Program Manager, take a leadership role in recruitment, training/enrichment, and providing feedback/oversight to OxEd staff, volunteers, and interns
  • Represent the Education Programs on committees/working groups with other Oxbow staff (administration, volunteer coordination, communication, etc.)
  • Support Education Program Manager in budget preparation and financial monitoring, grant applications, implementation and reporting, and OxEd program monitoring and evaluation
  • Participate in and support Oxbow public events and fundraising campaigns
  • Contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the Kids’ Farm and Living Playground for programmatic, public engagement, food security, and food sovereignty initiatives

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in outdoor education and/or working with youth, including demonstrated skill in creating and fostering safe (emotionally and physically) environments for youth 
  • At least 2 years of experience with program coordination or project management
  • At least 2 years of experience with day or residential camp programs, preferably in a role involving leadership, coordination and/or activity development
  • Demonstrated skill working with diverse partner/community organizations to develop, coordinate and/or deliver educational or related programming
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion and social/environmental justice 
  • Strong leadership skills, confident giving direction and managing people and activities 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, and punctuality 
  • Familiarity with and/or experience with topics such as sustainable agriculture, organic farming/gardening, food security/sovereignty, PNW ecology and native plants
  • Skill in language other than English (esp. Spanish) preferred
  • Ability to work hard physically, able to lift heavy & awkward objects up to 50 lbs., and spend full days outdoors and in inclement weather (rain, heat, etc.)

COMPENSATION

This is a regular, full-time position, with benefits that include 100% employer paid life insurance, healthcare, dental, and vision plans, retirement contribution match, and competitive paid time off. Additional benefit information is available upon request. The salary range is $55,000 to $60,000, depending on experience.
