The Island Operations Director is a year round position managing island operations, including overseeing island facilities, sustainable systems, fleet, supervision of staff, and providing customer service to island visitors. The purpose of the Island Operations Director position is to ensure island operations run smoothly and safely by directly overseeing the facilities, galley, and waterfront (captains and multiple motor vessels) staff.

Summary

The purpose of the Island Operations Director position is to ensure island operations run smoothly and safely by directly overseeing the facilities, galley, and waterfront (captains and multiple motor vessels) staff, while actively contributing to planning, budgeting, and construction management to expand our physical operations. This position reports directly to the Executive Director, is based out of Rockland, Maine for half the year, and requires living on Hurricane Island during island season the other half of the year. This position is a full-time, year-round position complete with a competitive salary (DOE) and benefits package. General Job Responsibilities

  • Management of seasonal and year round island operations and staff for facilities, galley, and fleet.
  • Infrastructure project management and planning.
  • Day to day island logistics and serving as Director on Call, which includes overnight responsibilities.     
  • Budgeting, operations reporting, hiring, and administrative tasks.
  • Planning for capital projects, strategic plan implementation, infrastructure system sustainability.
  • Engaging and interacting with Hurricane's community of students and researchers is an expected part of the job of everyone who works at Hurricane Island.

Education and Training

  • Higher education degree or commensurate work experience.
  • Sustainable systems and project management. 
  • Experience relating to managing a remote field station, wilderness resort, camp management or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Supervisory experience with 10 or more employees, including interviewing and hiring experience. 
  • Captain's license and/or Small Water Systems Operator license (strongly preferred, but not required
