Spend your summer helping the Education Department at San Antonio Zoo teach and empower elementary-aged campers to secure a future for wildlife! As a full-time, temporary Lead Camp Counselor, you will assist in all aspects of Zoo Camp and get to experience all the sights and sounds that come along with working at a zoo. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A LEAD CAMP COUNSELOR

The Lead Camp Counselor is enthusiastic about working with kids and helping support Education staff during camp. This position will be responsible for helping with camp prep, activity organization and delivery during camp, camp check-in, drop-off, and pick-up, camp counselor substitutions, running kids to their group, animal presentations, After Care, camp group management and all the other amazing things that fall under the umbrella of camp. The Lead Camp Counselor will also promote fun and engaging experiences for campers while maintaining the safety and well-being of the group and individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR CAMP COUNSELOR

  • Self-starter with a strong ability to proactively and efficiently complete everyday tasks not directly assigned.
  • Strong organizational and group management skills are preferred.
  • Strong desire to work with children grades K-5 in an outdoor setting is required.
  • Ability to work well with limited direction, alone or with a diverse team of staff and volunteers.
  • Ability and flexibility to accommodate last-minute program and schedule changes with a positive and supportive attitude.
  • Basic knowledge of biology, zoology, and the ability to organize, plan, collaborate and implement educational presentations.
  • Knowledge and experience in education or conservation science is preferred.
  • Twelve months experience leading K-5 group programs such as camps, scouts, classroom presentations, and children's programs highly preferred.
  • At least 2 years of college coursework in life sciences, zoology, education, environmental interpretation, or equivalent experience.

WORK SCHEDULE

This full-time, temporary position offers full-time hours starting March 6, 2023, and ending September 6, 2023. Camp training begins in April or May. Zoo Camp begins May 30 and goes through August 25 and consists of week-long camp sessions (Monday-Friday, 7:30a-3:15p). After Care, for campers, is offered from 3:00p-4:30p. This full-time, temporary position ends September 6, 2023.
