Summary
The New York Aquarium (NYA) is seeking a forward-thinking individual to oversee the vision, programming, and general operations for all off-site and on-site education programs, leveraging the opening of the new PlayQuarium exhibit to creatively strategize and execute the educational efforts in advancing conservation education through the lens of Discover, Inspire & Protect.
Responsibilities:
With the support of the Curator of Education, you will assist in the conceptualization, development, supervision, and implementation of a broad spectrum of on and off-site educational programs for organized groups, families & schools.
You will act as second in charge to the Curator of Education and be the main contact for the department in the absence of the Curator
You will oversee all full-time Program Coordinator and Conservation Educators, including conducting regular meetings, evaluation/review, hiring, and ensuring that work is completed on time and is of high quality.
You will assist the Program Coordinator and Conservation Educators with hiring, supervision and evaluation of part time staff.
You will help the team grow professionally and create an encouraging culture by identifying team members’ strengths, providing learning opportunities & feedback and delegating effectively.
You will collaborate with the Curator to manage and update program offerings, including initiating and maintaining efforts to promote programs within WCS and throughout the community.
You will serve as Camp Director for both out-of-school camps and summer camp.
You will work with Program Coordinators and Educators to develop, implement, and evaluate new programming for audiences including pre-k through 12th grade students, community events, camps, overnights, and general audience programs that align with the Discover - Protect - Inspire model.
In conjunction with the Manager of Professional Development, you will support refining the professional development workshops at NYA, school partnership opportunities and the Teacher Advisory Council.
You will conduct special demonstrations involving live animals as educational experiences may warrant.
You will attend regular NYA Education Department staff meetings and WCS Education Leadership Meetings when applicable.
You will assist with administrative support, including, but not limited to, meeting with the Registrar Team, monitoring booking systems and ordering materials through SAP.
You will work alongside the Curator to develop and maintain budgets for all aspects of Educational programming.
You will maintain internal relationships with other NYA Departments as well as WCS departments to provide unique opportunities for program participants.
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/ BA degree in biology, environmental science, conservation, education or related field
Three years of dynamic leadership experience of a team of staff and/or volunteers
Five years of instructional experience in formal or informal science education including programmatic development, implementation and evaluation
You have demonstrated experience cultivating and working with diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s in Science or Education
You have previously envisioned and executed a broad range of family programs or community events.
You have demonstrated the ability to develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
You have a proven management style that cultivates creativity and creative problem solving.
Conversational fluency in Spanish or Russian
