Summary
Black Hills State University is seeking to fill a 9-month instructor position for Outdoor Education. The position begins August 2023. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching and collaborating effectively across disciplines; teach classroom and field-based theory and skills in a variety of outdoor pursuits and environments; effectively navigate all aspects of outdoor learning; and support the program’s mission.
DUTIES:
Duties for this position include teaching undergraduate theory, technical skill, and experiential courses; overseeing internships; advising students in the Outdoor Education discipline; coordinating the Outdoor Education major, minor, and Certificate in Adventure Education; equipment, ropes course, and rock wall care and management; leading or coordinating service activities; program specific assessment and review; risk management; achieving and maintaining appropriate outdoor technical skill certifications.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
*A master’s degree in a relevant field
*specialized expertise and skills to teach (1) environmental education (2) interpretation and interpretive media, (3) risk management (4) recreation and outdoor education programming
*credentials to teach a variety of technical skills for land and aquatic adventure pursuits such as rock climbing, xc skiing, paddle sports, aquatic LG or WSI, archery, orienteering, camping and backpacking skills, fly fishing, or other
*field-based health-safety certification, WFR preferred (by the time of employment)
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* experience with interpretive media and educational technology
