Summary
The Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) seeks a full-time, temporary programming supervisor to facilitate summer day camp experiences at KEEN’s Windy City Park Rangers program. All KEEN employees must show proof of COVID 19 Vaccination. No exceptions.
This position is for 40 hours per week at $22/hour, with variable scheduling including some weekends. Priority will be given to candidates with verbal Spanish language proficiency. This position begins April 15, 2022 and ends September 15, 2022.
Background: KEEN’s Windy City Park Rangers offers 10 weeks of FREE summer camp programming in Ellensburg city parks for kids ages 5-13. Campers explore the natural features of the parks, while participating in traditional summer camp activities, like arts and crafts, games, and swimming and boating.
Applicants should have an interest in education, outdoor learning, natural resources, science, and working with children. Candidates should also be prepared for vigorous outdoor activity during the varying Central Washington summers, including heat, wind, and possible wildfire smoke.
The program supervisor will work closely with KEEN’s Environmental Education Director to create ageappropriate and engaging curriculum.
Essential Position Functions: The primary responsibilities of the Program Supervisor will be to manage all programming functions of the Windy City Park Rangers including, but not limited to:
- Build and facilitate learning activities for campers that includes:
- Weekly themed outdoor activities
- Educational and recreational games
- Field investigations
- Supervise up to 14 seasonal camp counselors and volunteers
- Problem solving daily operational issues as they arise, including communications with EE Director, city staff, KEEN staff, or parents/guardians
- Oversee and ensure the safety of staff and campers during activities
- Manage collection of program assessment and evaluation data
- Work outdoors, during hot weather, cold weather, and all conditions, in vigorous and athletic situations
- Possess boating, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor skills
- Be able to confidently share experiential learning opportunities (identifying local flora and fauna, climate, habitat, and other natural interpretive opportunities encountered in Kittitas County)
- Comply with dress code including wearing of KEEN/Windy City branded items
- Conduct themselves professionally in all communications and in all situations
Required Skills and Qualifications: The successful candidate will be:
- Dependable, self-motivated, and well-organized
- Experience working with children ages 5-13
- Able to manage outdoor learning experiences, identify safety concerns, and comply with relevant safety policies
- In possession of a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and a reliable vehicle
- Able to pass a criminal background check to work with youth
Desired Qualifications:
- Verbal proficiency in Spanish
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental sciences, elementary education, or related field
- Experience in day camp and informal education environments
- First aid/CPR training (provided, if needed)
- ARC Lifeguarding certified (provided, if desired)
Position Duration, Schedule, & Benefits: This is a 40 hour/week, temporary position that begins April 15, 2022 and ends September 15, 2022. Candidate must be able to commit to the entire duration of the program. The rate for the Program Supervisor is $22/hour.
KEEN does not offer health care benefits or paid time off, however, every employee in the State of Washington is entitled to 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Though these sick leave hours accrue, they are not accessible until after 90 days of employment.
