POSITION
The Seasonal Educator is a member of the Duke Farms Programs and Partnerships department. The Educator communicates and interprets stewardship and sustainability initiatives with visitors, members and event attendees. The Seasonal Educator is responsible for developing and executing educational opportunities to a wide variety of audiences, while using their naturalist knowledge and experience as an educator to support learning. Through positive, inclusive and informed interactions, this role supports visitor understanding and connection to Duke Farms’ landscapes, programs and mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Execute immersive, experiential education experiences at Duke Farms, connecting visitors with the organization’s commitment to stewardship, sustainability and conservation.Support the development and delivery of educational experiences, with a focus on audiences from diverse backgrounds.Collaborate with volunteers to provide guided interpretive walks and other pop-up educational opportunities. Support other visitor engagement initiatives like answering phone calls, assisting with bike rentals, membership and providing general wayfinding.Support events and convenings at Duke Farms, including providing orientation and tours for VIP visitors and special events.
Perform other work, including special projects, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in education, natural sciences or other related field, and/or relevant work experience and knowledge.A strong knowledge base in critical areas such as climate change, sustainability, conservation and the indigenous flora and fauna of New Jersey.Comfortable speaking to large groups of varying ages, backgrounds and abilities. Strong attention to detail, organizational abilities and communication skills.Strong computer skills, with the willingness and ability to learn and use new technology, including generative AI, to drive efficiency.Ability to traverse the 2,700-plus-acre Duke Farms property as well as travel to other locations indoors, outdoors and under various weather conditions. Ability to work in various outdoor conditions including but not limited to heat, cold, sun exposure and wet weather with potential exposure to environmental factors such as poison ivy, ticks and mosquitoes.Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays. Valid driver’s license.
