Since 2009, the Fairbanks Youth for Habitat Program has provided a unique work-learning experience, encouraging youth to pursue activities related to land stewardship, science, and natural resource conservation. The Program Coordinator provides mentorship to local youth from Fairbanks, Alaska, spending the summer learning about the environment, improving local wildlife habitats, and providing the youth with skills and knowledge for continued engagement in natural resource related activities.

Summary

The Fairbanks Youth for Habitat Program is a unique work-learning experience, encouraging youth to pursue activities related to land stewardship, science, and natural resource conservation. Since 2009, the program has sought to improve local wildlife habitats and provide youth with skills and knowledge for continued engagement in natural resource related activities.

The Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is an outreach and technical assistance organization whose mission is to serve its cooperators, private landowners, and all citizens of the district by promoting wise development and conservation of natural resources. With sponsorship from US Fish and Wildlife Service, FSWCD manages the program, coordinating the program’s partnerships, youth engagement, and community service projects.

FSWCD is seeking a candidate with experience in natural resource management and youth education. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to supervise youth, provide mentorship, and work in both a close-knit team and independently with little supervision. Daily tasks are varied, and flexibility and adaptability to a changing schedule are critical.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plan, coordinate, and supervise all daily activities for groups of up to 8 youth, ages 13-15.
2. Plan and implement technical projects such as streambank restoration, green infrastructure, and other natural resource related enhancements.
3. Deliver age-appropriate instruction and natural resource curricula to participants.
4. Establish relationships with participants, parents/guardians, and community partners and maintain positive, consistent communication between program staff, partners, and participants.
5. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

1. Must be organized and flexible/adaptable with the ability to multi-task.
2. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are essential.
3. Must show the ability to follow directions and follow through on all assigned tasks.
4. Capable of safe use of power and manual tools including saws, hammers, shovels, etc.
5. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform labor that can be strenuous at times.
6. Must be independent, self-motivated and require little supervision for daily tasks.
7. Valid driver’s license and passing a federal background check are required.

Desired Skills

1. Knowledgeable in stream bank restoration and revegetation techniques.
2. Experience working with youth specifically related to natural resource management.
3. Training in education and/or natural resource management.
4. Knowledge of local environments, flora and fauna, specifically fish and species ID, and locally invasive species.

This position begins part-time (20-30 hrs/wk) in late-April, switching to full time (40 hrs/wk) from May through late August 2022, working approximately 600 hours total. Pay starts at $19/hr, DOE.
