Located on the Modoc Plateau, the 70,000 acres of wilderness vary from 5,800 to nearly 10,000 feet, boasts abundant flora and fauna, and could be your home office for 4months.

Start Date: 5/15/2022; End Date: 9/16/2022

Position Description: Approximately 6miles of Owl Creek Trail was damaged during storm and flood events. The crew will be reconstructing low-water stream crossings, completing saw work to remove dozens of downed trees, drainage installation, and general trail repairs with hand tools.

Crew Living Accommodations: Field-life is rugged, and while on work hitches, members should expect to live without electricity, running water, and cell phone reception. For the duration of the season, crews will be camping in both the frontcountry and backcountry.

Members should plan to be mobile and expect to be traveling long distances in remote locations to get to their project sites.

While on hitch (up to 10 days at a time), this crew is alcohol and substance free.  If you are in the mood to get down and dirty, live lightly on the land, and get some hard work in this season, this is the crew for you.

Member Responsibilities:

  • Complete project tasks as assigned; whether it is trimming back brush from the trail, working with your team to move a 500lbs rock, or doing dishes.  Full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities.
  • Interact professionally with our partner organizations.
  • Assist Project Leader with logistics of the project, meal planning, developing emergency response plans, and completing logistical tasks.
  • Enjoy and make the most of this time in wilderness.

Member Qualifications

  • This is an entry level position and will begin with a week of skills training. No previous trail building experience is required.
  • Passion for the outdoors.
  • Desire to do strenuous manual labor in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, extreme cold, high winds, and precipitation.
  • Desire to learn and use new skills.
  • Commitment to living and working in an intensive crew environment; interpersonal skills and community living experience are a plus.
  • Backpacking experience preferred
  • Previous public service work preferred

Member Benefits:

  • $300 - weekly living allowance
  • $650 - one time round trip travel allowance
  • $1,718.25 AmeriCorps award upon completion of the program
  • Professional Development Opportunities: Wilderness First Aid, Crosscut Saw Certification
