Upham Woods Center DIrector

Upham Woods is a residential outdoor learning center within the UW-Madison, Division of Extension, and provides hands-on, field-based, educational opportunities to youth, youth leaders, and adults through programs focused on environmental leadership education. The Center, officially accredited through the American Camping Association (ACA), consists of 14 buildings, including a new welcome center, a raptor enclosure, and provides seasonal and year-round lodging for visitors. The Center sits on the Wisconsin River with over 300 acres of forested land, including a 210-acre island, which is designated as a state natural area.

The Upham Woods Center Director provides overall educational program leadership and oversight of all administrative functions at the Center to support excellence in programming, including; oversight of budget and fiscal operations, personnel supervision and administration, facility operations, risk management, policy, and land management activities. The Director will also be responsible for strategically and creatively advancing the goal of diversifying the Center's funding portfolio that supports the Center's mission. To be successful in this position, we expect that the Center Director will build strong and collaborative institutional and external partnerships, while leading youth and adult programming that is inclusive, culturally relevant, and innovative in meeting the emerging needs of diverse audiences. The Director will oversee a dynamic team of long-term and seasonal employees and create a positive workplace culture and environment by leading with fairness, compassion, and dignity.

This position directly supervises the Facility and Operations Manager and Administrative Assistant Director and two Program Coordinators, and thoughtfully facilitates the Upham staffing strategy and implementation of core Upham operations including recruitment, hiring, training, and performance management of operations staff, budget development, strategic communications, and long-term facility planning. This position may share responsibility as emergency on-call and on an as-needed basis for evening and weekend programming, flexing work hours during the typical work week (M-F) to accommodate evening or weekend hours. The successful candidate must hold a valid driver's license to drive university fleet vehicles, and also must obtain First Aid Certification within three months of the start date.
