Klamath Outdoor Science School is a non-profit organization based in Klamath Falls, OR. We are currently hiring instructors for our Spring 2023 Outdoor School 5th and 6th grade residential programs. Programs will be held at our main camp site in Sun Pass State Forest. Instructors will be responsible for small and large group instruction in field studies as determined by the Executive Director. Schedule: Training week of April 17, programs April 24 - June 9, 2023

    *option to continue employment in the summer and fall seasons

Klamath Outdoor Science School is a non-profit organization based in Klamath Falls, Oregon. We are currently hiring instructors for our Spring 2023 Outdoor School 5th and 6th grade residential programs. Programs will be held at our main camp site in Sun Pass State Forest, north of Ft. Klamath. Instructors will be responsible for small and large group instruction in field studies as determined by the Executive Director. All curriculum and teaching materials are provided.

We prefer that instructors stay overnight (housing and meals provided), but travel to and from camp each day is permissible. If commuting, please plan to be at camp by 8 AM and stay until at least 5 PM, some days until 9 pm

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead small and large groups in hands-on science/natural history lessons.
  • Demonstrate proper use of equipment
  • Lead games and activities between lessons.
  • Assist students in completing their field journals and other assignments.
  • Assist with daily routines, including meal times.
  • Communicate with teachers and chaperones as needed.
  • Administer first aid/CPR as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an outdoor education program
  • Knowledge of natural and cultural resources of Southern Oregon
  • Experience teaching elementary and/or junior high students
  • Background in environmental science, education, or related field
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to effectively organize and manage instruction
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people and groups
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work within a timeframe and stay on schedule
  • Ability to tailor instruction to meet student needs

Working Conditions:

  • Programs take place outside in all weather conditions, unless conditions are deemed unsafe.
  • The Sun Pass camp is rustic, with some uneven terrain, wooded trails, and variable weather conditions. The bathrooms and dining areas are enclosed and heated.
  • Housing and most meals are provided during program days. Housing is available on weekends, and the kitchen will remain open for staff use.
  • Instructors are guaranteed one hour of break/rest time each day during student free and quiet times.

Additional Requirements:

  • First Aid/CPR training (may be available during staff training)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
