Summary
Ogden Nature Center: Environmental Education Teacher/Naturalist Internship
The Ogden Nature Center is a nonprofit nature education center and nature preserve. Our mission is to unite people with nature and nurture appreciation and stewardship of the environment. We are recruiting one AmeriCorps member for 11 months of service to begin approximately January 30th. This position is offered through Utah Conser
vation Corps and offers a unique opportunity to gain experience and practice a wide range of skills including teaching, curriculum development, and environmental education.
Primary Duties
- Perform events related to environmental stewardship or environmental education.
- Onsite School Programs - Schedule and conduct environmental education programs for school children; assist in the development of curriculum, activities, and exhibits.
- Work with our outreach team to lead science education programming to first grade students throughout the state of Utah.
- Develop and conduct preschool, home school and after school programs.
- Provide programs for groups with special needs, such as underserved populations, elderly and developmentally disabled.
- Community Education - assist with community program development, implementation, and strengthen community awareness.
- Summer Camps – Assist in camp planning and implementation.
- Events – Assist with planning and organization of special events.
- Education staff work a 4/10 schedule, allowing for 3-day weekends except for special events or programs.
Training/Professional Development you will receive
- Data collection and reporting training.
- First Aid and CPR training.
- Training on classroom management and environmental education.
Qualifications
- College graduate preferred: science or teaching degrees preferred.
- Interested in environmental education and conservation.
- Love working and being outdoors.
- Articulate and an excellent writer.
- Computer proficient (Word, Excel, email).
- Interested in pursuing a career in environmental education, conservation, or land management.
- Excited to be an AmeriCorps National Service Member with the Utah Conservation Corps.
- A valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
- Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work.
- Ability to make a 1700-hour (January 30th –December 15th) time commitment. This requires a 35–40-hour work week during our regular business hours and occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Three excellent references.
AmeriCorps Requirements
- Be a United States citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Eligible to serve an AmeriCorps term of service.
- Have a high school diploma or GED or work towards obtaining one while in the program. It is a requirement to obtain a high school diploma or GED before one is eligible to use the Education Award.
- Must undergo and pass a National Criminal History Check.
- Must be clear of any record on the National Sex Offender Public Registry; Must have a criminal record clear of any conviction(s) for murder.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a 1700 hr. AmeriCorps position that comes with these benefits:
- $17,500 living allowance (paid in even disbursements throughout term of service).
- $6,495 education award (available to members after successful service term) Federal, student loan forbearance and workers comp for all members.
