The Overnight Camping Supervisor manages the creation, development, implementation, and evaluation of all camping experiences, including weekend and overnight family/troop camping, summer camping experiences, to build girl leaders.

Summary

This is a full-time, regular (not seasonal) position located at the STEM Center of Excellence in Dallas, Texas.

Overnight Camping Supervisor

This position is responsible for the design of innovative and inclusive programs which offer unique and contemporary learning experiences to girls; supervision of staff and AmeriCorps team members to expand outdoor program options at the SCoE, and is the on-site lead for weekend, overnight and camp experiences.

Programming experiences include, but are not limited to: fire-building, hiking, camping, knife skills, knots, astronomy, and outdoor skills.

The position reports to the Director of Education and is a key member of a team serving Girl Scout campers, youth, volunteers, and families through innovative, dynamic outdoor opportunities.

                                                                             

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design, plan, and implement a welcoming, purposeful, inclusive, and robust weekend camp and summer camp program environment.
  • Serves as primary on-site supervisor and contact for weekend camp programs, including responding to urgent situations and overseeing on-site weekend events as assigned.
  • Supervises the successful operation of year-round camping experiences, related events, and applicable outdoor education programs in alignment with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to build girls of courage, confidence, and character across our diverse membership.

  • Independently manage logistics and activity bookings for overnight camp programing including troop, family, primitive, and resident camp experiences. This includes, but is not limited to, development and coordination of outdoor skills/programs, supply requests and organizing materials, lodging assignments and facility needs, scheduling staff, participant communication, required paperwork, data, and record-keeping.
  • Establishes operational procedures, goal attainment, safety and cost-effectiveness, program development emphasis in areas of youth leadership, teen program, and outdoor adventure troop camping.
  • Maintain compliance with ACA standards and state health department regulations.
  • Follows and reinforces protocols to ensure the safety and security of all visitors on site for camping.
  • Supervises and coordinates AmeriCorps members.
  • Oversee and supervise volunteers as needed for camping and events.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Education, develop and implement strategy to recruit and utilizes volunteers, including the creation of unique volunteer positions depending on needs of programming.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Education, integrate applicable and aligned programming opportunities, utilize survey results to make data-driven decisions, develops and implements a strategy to successfully fill overnight camping slots each weekend it is available, develops an appropriate cultural responsiveness to outdoor opportunities, and reviews evaluation data to ensures programing yields intended metrics and outcomes.
  • Coordinates, trains staff, and supervises facility-wide campfire programs and selects Outdoor Leadership (non-STEM) program partners for facility-wide weekend experiences.
  • Demonstrates and promotes a climate of courtesy, respect, and professionalism to coworkers, the volunteers served by this council and the others who whom her/his position puts her/him in contact.
  • Prioritizes and maintains positive and professional customer service.

 

Minimum requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience leading camp or outdoor recreation programming.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions as required.
  • Passion for outdoor activities and enjoys working outside.
  • Experience and enjoys working with youth.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to bring project to fruition.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and changing conditions.
  • Maintains professional appearance and interactions at all times.
  • Maintain a Wednesday – Sunday schedule with required Friday and Saturday evenings.

  • Attendance is an essential job requirement defined as having regular, consistent, reliable, punctual and predictable attendance including the ability to work regular hours and shifts, before and after hours, and on weekends, when required.

  • Must be able to travel within established geographic areas and council service centers, as necessary.
  • Must have reliable transportation, hold a valid drivers’ license and meet GSNETX driving record & automobile insurance requirements.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, environmental education, youth development, natural resources, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience with camp activities, such as archery and target sports, knife skills, astronomy, leatherworking, woodworking, wilderness cooking, etc.
  • Experience with diverse audiences preferred.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as assigned.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
