Looking for a great opportunity to work in education programming, perform community outreach, and work with animals? HARD is looking for a Program Leader III for the Sulphur Creek Nature Center and Shoreline Interpretive Center, overseeing the wildlife education department, with the primary focus of operating an educational program focusing on nature and local wildlife and the training of several resident animals for educational program use at one of our nature centers.

The primary responsibilities of this position are overseeing the education program which includes coordinating, directing and implementing a variety of District and government policies and procedures for the education department; overseeing the operations and staffing of the education department; training captive animals for program use; coordinating with the animal care department on both the health and well being of the animals and on overall volunteer management for the center.

Logistics include communication and supervision of subordinate staff and volunteers; trains, leads and directs the work related to District programs, events and activities; provides routine and moderately complex administrative support; assumes responsibility for site and/or program activities in the absence of a superior; and performs related work as required.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader, energetic, flexible, able to work in teams and independently, has a love for animals, learning, and supervising staff and volunteers.

DEFINITION

Under direction, plans, coordinates, directs and implements a variety of District programs, events and activities within assigned program area or areas; plans, schedules and coordinates logistics; trains, leads and directs the work of subordinate staff and volunteers; performs difficult and complex support work related to District programs, events and activities; provides routine and moderately complex administrative support; assumes responsibility for site and/or program activities in the absence of a superior; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the advanced level lead class in the Program Leader series. Incumbents in this class typically lead and direct the activities of subordinate staff within an assigned program area, but may also be assigned to perform difficult and complex support work within a program area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

•   Plans, organizes and leads program activities within an assigned program area.

•   Leads the work of subordinate staff and volunteers on a regular and ongoing basis; provides staff training in a wide range of program areas.

•   Performs difficult and complex program activities; communicates with parents, participants, staff, and volunteers regarding program-related issues; takes action to resolve the issues based on District policy and procedure and within limits of authority.

•   Oversees and directs the preparation of buildings and facilities and the setting up of equipment for scheduled activities/events.

•   Inspects program areas and equipment and recommends maintenance and repair as needed.

•   Maintains records of participation and collects participant fees.

•   Oversees and directs the transportation, issuance, receipt and use of program equipment and supplies; monitors equipment inventories and recommends procurement of items as needed.

•   Implements and monitors District procedures regarding the safety of participants.

•   Performs administrative duties such as phone and counter reception and registration processing,attending/scheduling staff meetings, recommending scheduling of staff, preparing reports, and monitoring expenditures.

•   At all times, demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors and the public.

•   Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

•   Minimum of 18 years of age.

 

Ability and Skill to:

•   Plan, organize and implement programs and activities based on District rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

•   Serve as a lead worker over subordinate staff and volunteers who are providing program services; arrange staffing schedules; provide training as needed; organize and direct work assignments; monitor performance.

•   Work with adults, children and families to conduct, monitor and lead a variety of activities.

•   Interpret District regulations and policies and monitor for compliance.

•   Prioritize work assignments, meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions; respond appropriately in an emergency situation.

•   Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

•   Maintain discipline among program participants and observe safety precautions.

•   Communicate effectively with a wide range of people.

•   Make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy; prepare narrative and statistical reports.

•   Respond appropriately to changing situations.

•   Use computer hardware and software, including standard word processing, spreadsheet, calendar, email and Internet software.

•   Maintain the confidentiality of participant, parent, staff, and volunteer information.

•   Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

 

Knowledge of:

•   Principles and practices of leadership and supervision.

•   Principles and practices of public relations.

•   Principles and practices of complaint resolution.

•   Policies, rules and regulations related to assigned activities.

•   The care and proper use of program equipment, materials, and supplies.

 

Education/Experience/Training:

•   Three years of recent full-time paid experience (or the part-time equivalent) in the specific assigned program area.

•   Specific areas of required expertise may vary, depending upon program specialty.

•   Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education that provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the class as determined by the District is also acceptable.

 

Special Requirements:

•   Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California drivers license.

•   Must pass a fingerprint and/or background clearance prior to employment.

•   Must obtain certification in First Aid and CPR from a recognized provider within six (6) months of employment and must maintain current certifications thereafter as a condition of continued employment.

•   Certain positions may require that other certifications be maintained.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The functions of this position are primarily performed in both indoor and outdoor locations, alone or as part of a team. In an indoor environment, the setting may be consistent with an office environment or a specialized program venue. In an outdoor environment, incumbents may be fully or partially exposed to a variety of climatic conditions. Specialized aspects of the work environment may also include high noise levels, working with participants who are using potentially dangerous equipment, exposure to office equipment with moving parts, exposure to dust and cleaning agents, or the handling of sick or dangerous animals. Incumbents may be assigned an irregular working schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays and may frequently have to travel between various locations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have: hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person, by telephone, by PA system and by radio; vision adequate to detect and respond to fast moving objects and to read fine print; bodily movement adequate to sit, walk, stand, reach turn, climb, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crawl, push and pull frequently; manual dexterity adequate to grasp objects, use fine manipulation, write and operate office machines and equipment; and strength to safely perform lifting and carrying of items up to 50 pounds.
