NY Sun Works is looking to hire a Curriculum Specialist / Teacher Trainer to deliver NY Sun Works curriculum and teaching tools to elementary school teachers in our network of partner schools.

Summary

*New Hybrid Position: teaching 1st-5th grade students in a NY Sun Works greenhouse classroom + Curriculum Specialist / Teacher Trainer at select partner schools*  

While working closely with the NY Sun Works education team, the candidate will be teaching 2 periods per school day at the Sun Works Center at PS 333 Manhattan School for Children. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, flexible, professional, capable of managing their work load and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced non-profit environment. Curriculum Specialist/Teacher Trainer will be responsible for:

  • Delivering NY Sun Works curriculum in a rooftop greenhouse environment for 1st-5th grade elementary school students (2 teaching periods per day) 
  • Delivering the training program to a select group of NY Sun Works partner schools and mentoring a group of elementary school teachers so they know how to use the NY Sun Works sustainability science program in a hydroponic classroom setting 

The teaching portion of the job includes:

  • Teaching one grade per day/2 teaching periods at PS 333 using the NY Sun Works Discovering Sustainability Science curriculum 

The training program for our partner schools includes: 

  • Two in-person partner meetings per year (one in the fall and the second in the spring)
  • At least two virtual meetings in between the in-person meetings (in addition to email, phone and text message correspondence)
  • Co-facilitating group Professional Learning sessions for teachers throughout the school year (in-person and virtual)
  • Mastering NY Sun Works curricula as it exists currently
  • Advising partner teachers on content connections within NY Sun Works curriculum and offering ideas on implementation timelines
  • Providing timely interaction and answering content questions via email, phone, and text messages
  • Developing positive and enriching relationships with partner teachers
  • Traveling to partner schools (located across the 5 boroughs)
  • Distributing curriculum access and communicating delivery dates
  • Tracking teachers’ online usage of the curriculum
  • Supporting annual events for teachers and the annual Discovering Sustainability Science Youth Conference

 

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of teaching science 
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating student programming
  • Bachelor degree from accredited university, Masters in Education preferred
  • Affinity for teacher training and an ability to facilitate memorable training tips/tools
  • Deep understanding of the NGSS, and extensive knowledge of how students learn
  • Experience using Google product applications or G-Suite
  • Passion for Science, Sustainability and Environmental Education and working with teachers
  • Attention to detail with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt, with strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Flexibility to jump in and help team as needed
  • Passion for local food production, and urban farming
  • Candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to be considered
  • NY State teaching certification is a plus but not required
