We are looking to fill our leadership position at San Gorgonio Outdoor Science School. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic about outdoor and environmental education. This requires someone with the ability to think quickly on their feet, great communication skills and leadership abilities. Someone with a vision that looks toward expanding our program in the future as they look to shape their own vision toward a future in environmental education. The Site Manager is responsible for overseeing daily program operations, leading staff meetings, and providing support and evaluations.
Salary: $1,300 per week
Includes room and meals-during the four day school week
$300 per month stipend for health benefits
Job begins October 1 and ends approximately May 27, 2022
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
A combination of experience or training in the following areas:
University graduate
Two years minimum experience in a residential outdoor science school or camp as a director or assistant director.
California teaching credential preferred.
A general knowledge of general science and familiarity with the CA Science Standards and Next Generation Standards
The ability to manage, interview, evaluate and organize fifteen to thirty staff members and form a united team.
The ability to oversee the day to day operation of a residential outdoor science school with a weekly population of 100 to 180 students.
Excellent communication skills are a must as you will lead staff and be in constant communication with visiting school administration, teachers, and especially students. Communicating effectively with all people will go a long way in ensuring a safer, better and easier year with all parties involved.
Job Description
Provides leadership and communication between program director, staff, and camp manager.
Oversees the planning and participates in staff training.
Administer four day residential program for San Gorgonio Outdoor Science School.
Be responsible for all day to day operations of science school.
Provide training and monitoring the activities and safety of instructors, staff, visiting teachers and the general student population.
Enforce student discipline policies.
Evaluates staff on a regular basis and communicates feedback.
Maintain all safety rules and regulations of the science school.
Ensures all activities are properly staffed and are carried out according to program requirements and daily schedules
Plans for program contingencies and alternatives in the event of weather and or other issues.
Develops and maintains emergency plans and protocols.
Holds regularly scheduled staff meetings.
Acts as a liaison with visiting school teachers. Plans for a meeting at the beginning of the week to assist in goals and expectations for the week. Plans for an ending meeting for evaluation purpose.
Ensures site is ready for students on Tuesday and closes down site on Friday.
Organize and maintain program and confidential student records.
Perform other duties as may be assigned for the benefit and organization of the site by the program director.
Physical and Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit, reach with hands and arms from the waist to at or above shoulder level. An employee also is regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, push, pull, twist, crouch or crawl; climb or balance. An employee is required to lead extended mountain hikes over varied terrain which may include gravel, dirt, rocks, mud, ice and snow. Employee will need to be able to hike quickly up to two miles in an emergency situation.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements
The employee must hold a valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain car and driving insurability.
A valid CPR and First Aid certificate, fully Covid-19 vaccinated including booster.
