Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist III (Outreach Educator)

Outreach Educator position covering approximately 20 counties in Southeastern Mississippi. The educator will conduct school programs, attend community events, and facilitate Teacher Workshops on behalf of Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, & Parks' Museum of Natural Science. This position is based in your home office with frequent travel to designated counties and Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson, Mississippi.

WORK STATION:  Southeastern Counties of Mississippi

JOB DESCRIPTION: The biologist in this position is responsible for and participates in the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Outreach Education Programs.        

• Develop & present hands-on educational programs to school groups in designated counties.
• Develop & present hands-on interpretive programs to other public groups in counties.
• Write, edit, and/or coordinate production of necessary materials such as educational materials, brochures, and magazine articles.
• Conduct teacher-training workshops. Examples: Project WILD, Project WET.
• Communicate/give presentations at professional fish and wildlife and educational meetings and conferences on the status and success of the program.
• Care for a small collection of animal ambassadors.
• Provide technical assistance related to conservation resources to individuals/schools/other groups.
• Provide support for museum and agency events statewide.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE OR SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Previous teaching experience and demonstrated knowledge of biology and ecology.
• Ability to communicate both in writing and speaking.
• Ability and desire to work with audiences of all ages.
• Ability and desire to develop and conduct educational programs.
• Ability to work well with staff and supervisors.
• Computer skills required: word processing and spreadsheets.

WORK SCHEDULE: Daily hours will vary according to schedule and activities. Will require weekend and evening work.  Will require frequent overnight travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in wildlife/fisheries, ecology/biology or in wildlife/fisheries conservation management, conservation education, or a related field.

STARTING ANNUAL SALARY:  $43,509.31
