The position is currently hybrid in-person/remote and can change as business needs warrant. The candidate must easily be able to work onsite at the museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco when needed. Candidates are required to have up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination, including receiving a booster shot, as a condition of employment, absent qualifying exemptions in accordance with applicable laws. POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Foundation and Government Grants, the Government Grants Officer will manage state and federal grant submissions in support of the California Academy of Sciences’ mission to regenerate the natural world through science, learning, and collaboration. This position is part of a team that solicits significant grants for the Academy's core programs as well as global, cross-functional, and forward-thinking restricted gifts that advance research and science education to promote regenerative solutions in the Bay Area and around the world. This is a full-time position.

POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop compelling government proposals for Academy-wide programs; write proposal templates and reports; research and write proposal attachments for government funders
Coordinate strategy development in collaboration with Academy leadership, Government Relations, program, and Development staff as required
Collaborate with Accounting and Finance teams on grant compliance
Conduct prospect research to identify new state and federal funding opportunities on a regular basis and in partnership with Government Relations, program, and Development staff
Keep up-to-date on current compliance guidelines through quarterly review process and professional development. Share regular updates with cross-divisional federal grants team and Institutional Philanthropy teammates
Serve as a content expert on Academy projects, such as environmental issues, sustainability solutions, education, biodiversity science, and related special projects
Maintain accurate and timely records of all interactions with government funders using Tessitura donor database software
Manage a grants calendar for government grants to ensure timely submission of proposals and reports; update grant deadlines in donor database as required
Provide event support (periodically on evenings and weekends)
Follow all Academy safety regulations
Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required or preferred.

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:

A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:

Demonstrated track record of success in securing state and/or federal grants
Two years or more of grant writing and compliance experience in a complex, non-profit setting
Professional training and/or coursework in grant writing and compliance

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Excellent organizational and time-management skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, and demonstrated success delivering high-quality work and meeting deadlines
Proactive and solutions-oriented approach to challenges
Ability to work collegially in a team environment but also independently in an effective and productive manner
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including strong proofreading skills and attention to budget details
Computer proficiency and ability to learn new software quickly 

Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
G Suite (Google Apps) experience preferred
Demonstrated database experience, particularly with Tessitura, is a plus
Comfort working in Grants.gov and other grant portals preferred

Demonstrated interest and/or expertise in museums and scientific concepts related to biodiversity, sustainability, and the natural world preferred
An interest and sense of enjoyment when working with different groups of people, exploring diverse viewpoints, and finding points of agreement to move a project forward
Sense of humor and curiosity
