Lead 13-and-14-year-olds on area hikes in Westchester and the Lower Hudson Valley. Trips include Harriman State Park, Mt Beacon, and Ward Pound Ridge to name a few places! We prefer someone 21 and over to lead this group of explorers on day hikes throughout the summer- teaching about the natural world, science, and stewardship!

Needed for Teatown Natural Science Day Camp

June 27 – August 19, 2022

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 21+ and have experience working with teens.  Interest in environmental education and natural history helpful but not necessary.  Knowledge of lower Hudson Valley and Westchester hiking areas preferred. Previous CPR/ Wilderness First Aid certifications preferred. Physically active and demanding position. 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Daily supervision and safety of teen Explorers (ages 13 -14)
  • Coordinates off-site trips for group with Director.  Assesses group ability, trip appropriateness, trail safety and weather conditions daily. 
  • With Camp Director keeps bus drivers informed of daily destination, driving directions, and drop-off and pick-up locations.
  • Informs Camp Director immediately of any changes in daily trip plan, or emergency situation.
  • Acts as Explorers Health Director.  Administers basic first aid, keeps health log for Explorers, contacts 911 and Camp Director in case of emergency.  Keeps Camp Health Director informed of all health issues with Explorers group.
  • Coordinates activities, games, and crafts for group.
  • Teach topics on natural history and the environment.
  • Works to establish teamwork and compatibility within group.  Ensures safe conduct between campers on bus and on trails.
  • Prepares daily lessons and organizes materials to carry out activities.
  • Attend all staff meetings, training, and evaluation sessions.
  • Works in conjunction with Director and Assistant Director to keep parents informed of camper issues.
  • Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of equipment.

 

WORK SCHEDULE

Eight weeks, Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 3:30

 

TRAINING PLAN

Required attendance during weeklong training program, June 20 – June 24, 2022 Training covers safety procedures (including CPR/ First Aid certification), group dynamics, activity ideas, lesson planning, tour of buildings and grounds.

 

SALARY

Starting at $2,900 – depending on experience
