Summary
Chewonki Elementary and Middle School is growing for next year and we are looking for a motivated and experienced educator to join our strong team in a teacher support role. The learning specialist/teaching assistant works directly with the lead teachers, especially in grades 1-4 to assist and facilitate integrated, place-based lessons in all core subject areas, experiential outdoor activities, and flow of the school day.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work to honor and uphold the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and a lens of anti-racism in the best interest of participants, constituents, and staff across the organization
- A willingness to work as a team member among the Elementary & Middle School department and the greater Chewonki community
- Support Elementary and Middle School lead teachers and help facilitate academic lessons and projects, including daily math lessons
- Provide targeted academic skill building for students who are identified by lead teachers and academic dean as needing extra support
- Assist with creation of academic goal setting plans for individual students and supporting work towards meeting goals
- Facilitate daily meal and playtime rituals, and group activities
- Support specials programming and teachers (music, art, outdoor skills, and farm)
- Assist with risk management and group movement in outdoor settings
- Independently supervise the class in specific situations, including teacher break time
- Provide support for the emotional and physical well being of students at all times
- Support professional communication with parents
- Share the collective responsibility within risk management (physical, behavioral, institutional, etc.) by:
- Using sound judgment
- Operating within your skillset and Chewonki protocols
- Responding to and/ or alerting the appropriate person(s) when you see something that may compromise safety
- Maintain a high level of professionalism
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work on the Chewonki campus
- Contribute to and collaborate with the Chewonki community through committees and foundation wide events
- Act as substitute in the case of teacher absence
- Assist with evaluation and feedback on students
- Assist with off-campus field trips
- Attend weekly faculty meetings
- Attend all-staff meetings
- Assist with overnight experiences for individual classes
- Attend training and planning days across the calendar year
PREREQUISITES
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Elementary or General) or formal education training
- Prior experience working with elementary and middle-school aged children in a formal educational setting
- Experience working with students with learning differences and disabilities, including literacy and math content
- Must complete fingerprinting requirements of Maine Department of Education
- Driver’s license approved by Chewonki’s insurance carrier
- The Chewonki Foundation requires that 100% of staff are vaccinated against COVID-19, as allowed for by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination will be required upon acceptance of a job offer.
