JOB SUMMARY: AKA Science (All Kids Are Scientists) is a fun, hands-on kit-based afterschool science program that serves hundreds of under-resourced elementary and early middle school students. The AKA Science Program Coordinator works with the Program Manager to prepare 8-class science kits that engage youth in a variety of STEM topics such as biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, earth science, and forensic science. The Coordinator position is primarily a back-end organizational role that requires an extremely detail-oriented self-starter who is comfortable juggling a variety of tasks independently such as activity testing, comparison shopping & ordering large amounts of supplies, management of a very large inventory, maintaining meticulous organization on multiple levels, and assisting with writing & developing curriculum. The position also involves periodic, highly interactive phases of coordinating with corporate & community volunteer groups and training class instructors, as well as teaching occasional no-school-day & summer STEM camps for children in grades 1-6. Job hours are Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm, with some flexibility required to work occasional evenings and weekends.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Plan and coordinate supply kit preparation, assembly, storage, and distribution, including off-site kit-building events with community partners
• Assist Program Manager with volunteer outreach, coordination, and scheduling; communicate cordially with volunteer liaisons, facilitate volunteer kit-building events
• Test and revise hands-on science activities as needed (for 2-3 topics per year)
• Update curriculum documents and supply spreadsheets as directed, including working with Manager to develop new curriculum, content, and formats
• Comparison shop online/in person and purchase supplies for up to 60 kits per school term
• Organize and maintain supply inventory and tracking, including warehouse organization and inventory system
• Support and provide recognition to volunteers throughout the kit-building process, including coordinating thank-you gifts and cards post-kit-building
• Facilitate AKA Science trainings for instructors (in groups and one-on-one), including working with Manager to update/improve training format and content
• Produce supplemental instructor resources (e.g. activity photos, worksheets, and extension activities)
• Reach out to community partners to leverage monetary and in-kind supply donations for program purposes
• Track information in multiple program databases
• Teach occasional no-school-day & summer STEM day camps for grades 1-6; plan lessons and activities, teach groups of no more than 12 students with or without volunteer assistance, and follow camp protocols.
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Complete and submit in a timely manner all required Impact NW timesheets, financial documentation, volunteer hours, and reports

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in science, education, library, or a related field
• Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and complete multiple and varied tasks
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
• Initiative, resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently
• Familiarity with science concepts and the ability to translate them into activities and explanations for elementary- and middle-school youth
• Experience working with youth in educational programs
• Experience with K-8 curriculum development 
• Ability to reach out to and collaborate with a broad spectrum of community members
• Ability to facilitate instructor trainings and volunteer events for up to 20 volunteers at a time
• Ability to travel efficiently in the Portland area via regular access to a personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement (this requires a valid driver's license, adequate insurance coverage on the vehicle, and a history of safe driving)
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs/Sheets, and online research and purchasing
• Ability to analyze and synthesize information and engage in creative problem-solving
• Sensitivity to and ability to relate to people from diverse lifestyles, cultures, and socioeconomic levels
• Ability to provide professional communications and leadership in a variety of meetings/presentation settings that support open, honest communications and inclusion of diversity
• Ability to work effectively within a strengths-based service delivery model
• Availability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends
• Willingness to work as a team member and support the mission and goals of Impact NW
• Ability to pass a criminal background check

PREFERRED-BUT-NOT-REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience with volunteer outreach, coordination, and support 
• Experience managing a large inventory
• Bilingual and/or bicultural skills
• Experience with SUN Community Schools (SUN is a key partner) or other after school programs

THIS JOB REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

• Repetitive motion, prolonged sitting, and extensive visual involvement;
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and engage in frequent bending up and down;
• Ability to efficiently travel locally in order to perform duties and other agency related errands;
• Ability to work back and forth between a supply warehouse (not climate-controlled)
