Summary
The Brownsville History Intern will acquire project management skills within a collaborative digital humanities environment, comprehend fundamentals and purpose of transcribing manuscript content for improved online discoverability and usability, and enhance curatorial skills including identifying engaging themes, conducting historical research, and conveying stories through writing and image. Intern will work collaboratively with a team including TNC staff and academic partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Mapping family relationships of enslaved people, resulting in a visual representation that illustrates the data
- Transcribing handwritten notes from the Upshur Family papers that contain genealogical details of enslaved people
- Conduct research (primarily online) to highlight personal narratives of the people enslaved at Brownsville
- Creation of a creative final project to highlight findings
- Does not supervise any staff, but will work collaboratively with supervisor, other TNC staff and an academic mentor
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience and/or interest in African American history and culture
- Interest in pursuing a career in public history, preservation, or a related field
- Ability to learn procedures and follow instructions
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Major in Public History
- Willing to work in a dynamic office setting and remotely, if needed, with occasional travel for research
- Experience with technology as related to public history projects
- Experience with digital humanities projects
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated;
Current funding provides for $16.00 per hour, 35 hours/week, 10-week duration. Some benefits, and shared housing available. Desired start date is flexible, but position duration will occur between May and August 2022.
