Camp Habitat is a nature education and ecology camp for kids located at Creamer’s Field Refuge on College Road in Fairbanks, Alaska. Counselors are responsible for the daily set up/ take down of camp, prep work for lessons, leadership, and supervision with an instructor for one group of approximately 10-18 children per week. Groups range in age from 4 - 5 (pre-school) and 6 - 11 years old (day camp).

Summary

Camp Habitat is a nature education and ecology camp for kids located at Creamer’s Field Refuge on College Road in Fairbanks, Alaska. Counselors are responsible for the daily set up/ take down of camp, prep work for lessons, leadership, and supervision with an instructor for one group of approximately 10-18 children per week. Groups range in age from 4 - 5 (pre-school) and 6 - 11 years old (day camp). 

Counselor Responsibilities

  • Participate in staff training sessions, and become familiar with Creamer’s Field Refuge
  • Work as a team to communicate well with the Director, fellow staff and volunteers
  • Facilitate games each day
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Assist instructors with everyday logistics (hauling gear)
  • Maintain camp equipment (including the organization of Camp Habitat basement)
  • Assure a safe physical and psychologically supportive environment for all children
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director

Qualifications Desired

  • Ages 14+
  • Sincere enjoyment and respect for children and nature
  • Interest teaching and/or working with children
  • Respect of ecological processes, Alaskan flora and fauna, basic outdoor skills, and sound environmental practices
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and the desire and ability to make environmental education a fun, experiential journey of discovery
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds
  • Maturity to be a role model to children at camp
  • Responsibility, integrity and patience
  • Ability to deal effectively and patiently with discipline

  • June 8-10 (9:30AM - 5:30PM), Training/Planning Days
  • June 13-17 (12PM - 4:30PM) & June 20-24 (8AM - 12:30PM), Pre-school Camps (ages 4-5)
  • June 27-29 (9:30AM - 5:30PM), Training/Planning Days
  • July 11-15 & July 18 - 22 (8:30AM - 4:30PM), Day Camp (ages 6-11)
  • July 26 & 27 (10:00AM – 2:00PM), Clean-Up/De-Brief Days
