This position is based out of EITHER our Massabesic Center located in Auburn, New Hampshire OR our McLane Center in Concord, New Hampshire and will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon (to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people) by planning and conducting daily lessons and activities for campers on environmental education, assisting with camp coordination of daily nature-based activities, supervising campers during extended care programs.

Summary

This position is based out of EITHER our Massabesic Center located in Auburn, New Hampshire OR our McLane Center in Concord, New Hampshire and will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon (to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people) by planning and conducting daily lessons and activities for campers on environmental education, assisting with camp coordination of daily nature-based activities, supervising campers during extended care programs. 

Location: McLane Center (Concord, NH) or Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH) 

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30 pm, seasonal full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid).  Daily hours may vary due to camp needs. 

Schedule: Seasonal – June 13-Aug 19, 2022 (10 weeks total including 1 week of staff training, 8 weeks of camp, and 1 week of camp closeout) 

Function: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by planning and conducting daily lessons and activities for campers on environmental education, assisting with camp coordination of daily nature based activities, and supervising campers during extended care programs. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develops and implements daily environmental activities for EITHER 4-5 OR 6-12 year old campers. 
  • Supervises and maintains responsibility for camper safety and well-being. 
  • Assists with plan and materials preparation; and maintenance of program materials. 
  • Submits written lesson plans to Camp Director before each session. 
  • Assists with planning and teaching all camp environmental lessons and activities for campers. 
  • Provides first aid to campers as needed. 
  • Performs cleaning duties as assigned. 
  • Performs camper check-in and check-out of camp. 
  • Provides feedback to parents of campers. 
  • Participates in camp evaluation and cleanup at the end of the session. 
  • Ensures compliance with NH’s COVID safety guidelines for summer camps 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Leadership: Reports to the Camp Director 

Working Conditions: Outdoor camp setting; excellent non-smoking environment. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: Basic understanding of biology/ecology/geology (high school level life or earth sciences) required. College level coursework in elementary education, environmental education, outdoor education, biology, natural history or related field preferred. Training regarding effective outdoor education teaching methods and site-specific opportunities for ecological learning will be provided.  

Experience: Eagerness and excitement to share basic facts about biology/ecology in fun, interactive ways is required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required. Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid certification and CPR certification or equivalent, or willingness to obtain certifications; ARC Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent desirable. Experience teaching children, preferably in a camp setting and demonstrated ability to develop creative environmental education activities is preferred. 

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.  Creativity, flexibility and enthusiasm necessary with a sincere interest in the natural environment or education desired. Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check. 

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting and able to lift up to 50 lbs.  Camp uniform (provided) required.  

Minimum age required: 16 (with reliable transportation).
