Summary
The AmeriCorps member will serve 40 hours per week Mon- Fri from August 2022-June 2023. A weekly Stipend and furnished housing will be provided at no cost to the member, located within Great Smoky Mountains National Park near the gateway community of Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Primary duties include guiding students on field trips both in person and virtually, reviewing environmental education programs offered on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The programs occur at several locations in the park on a variety of natural and cultural resources topics and use a variety of techniques that are interactive, placed-based and hands-on. The member will have the opportunity create or adapt education programs and materials through exposure to the various science and cultural resources in the park. Members will be provided with research materials and other resources needed to develop the programs. Lessons are guided by Tennessee and North Carolina State and national standards and emphasize science and cultural history education. Members will help build relationships with and meaningfully engage with local communities of color and rural low-income communities in the region.
The AmeriCorps supervisor and the Education Staff will provide coaching and training throughout the service year, allowing member the chance for growth and exposure to multiple career possibilities.
Primary Functions of Position:
1) Guiding K -12 (Mostly K-8) grade field programs based out of Headquarters & Twin Creeks areas.
2) Supporting the research and development of educational material/content for Resource Protection and Education. Example: Social Media content, signage, print and web-based media, website management, video production etc.
3) Aligning existing programs and partnerships with JEDI principles (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion)
4) Collaborating with education lead on the winter Parks in Classrooms program to local schools. Includes calling teachers, organizing materials, scheduling with park staff and presenting programs in the classroom or virtually.
