Summary

Become part of the management team for our dynamic, diverse and productive avian collection. Under general supervision of the Bird Curator, the Bird Supervisor is responsible for supervising the exceptional care of animals within Riverbanks’ bird collection

Responsibilities: Become part of the management team for our dynamic, diverse and productive avian collection. Under general supervision of the Bird Curator, is responsible for supervising the exceptional care of animals within Riverbanks’ bird collection. Has an advanced knowledge of avian biology and aviculture. Trains, delegates, evaluates, and supervises the work of Bird Keepers, interns, and volunteers. Maintains engaging and productive exhibits and functional, orderly work areas. Implements breeding recommendations/protocols. Reviews and updates Standard Operating Procedures. Oversees procedures including capture, restraint, and introductions. Works with veterinary staff to diagnose and treat animal illness and injury. Assists in creating and managing diet plans. Assists in animal transports.  Maintains accurate and effective animal and staff records. Leads welfare monitoring, enrichment and operant conditioning programs within Department. Leads Department participation in Riverbanks Dive Program (penguin exhibit maintenance/management). Submits and tracks facilities work orders. Liaises with other Departments.  Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology or Wildlife Management and three to five years of experience working with exotic birds in a professional setting, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must have experience working directly with exotic birds in a professional setting. Supervisory experience a plus. Must be a self-starter with excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and customer service skills required. Must possess or be eligible for a valid SC driver’s license.  Must be, or be willing and able, to be trained to participate in the Riverbanks Dive Program (open water SCUBA, dry suit/cold water dive, First Aid/CPR/AED/Oxygen Provider certifications).
