The Nature Conservancy seeks an invasive species communications coordinator for its Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP). The position is located in Keene Valley, NY, and requires work throughout New York’s six-million-acre Adirondack Park. The coordinator leads the development and implementation of an annual communications plan, organizes APIPP’s annual education calendar and provides training on invasive species awareness, and serves as a resource for events held by partners.

ABOUT THE ADIRONDACK PARK INVASIVE PLANT PROGRAM

The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) is an award-winning invasive species program that leads the Conservancy’s invasive species work in the Adirondacks in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). APIPP is one of eight established Partnerships for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISMs) in New York. Its mission is to protect the Adirondack region from the negative impacts of invasive species. Program goals are to prevent new invasive species introductions to the region, detect and rapidly respond to new infestations, and mitigate harmful impacts of established infestations. APIPP advances a comprehensive, integrated approach that incorporates awareness building, prevention, early detection, rapid response, monitoring, restoration, and innovation strategies. YOUR POSITION WITH THE NATURE CONSERVANCY

The Communications Coordinator is a key member of the APIPP team. The team works in partnership with NYSDEC to protect the Adirondack region from the impact of invasive species. The Coordinator works closely with other APIPP and Conservancy employees, NYSDEC, and partners to develop, manage, and advance communications, outreach and education programs to help prevent the spread of invasive species.

The work location is Keene Valley, New York, USA. This position requires on-site work throughout New York’s six-million-acre Adirondack Park.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Coordinator works closely with the APIPP Program Manager and the Conservancy’s Adirondack Communications Manager to lead the development and implementation of an annual communications plan to strategically engage partners and the public in preventing the spread of invasive species. The Coordinator also develops and communicates messaging that promotes APIPP and the Conservancy’s conservation priorities and program successes. The Coordinator organizes APIPP’s annual education calendar, and provides training on invasive species awareness, identification and data collection. The Coordinator works with partners and contractors to develop educational outreach materials and serves as a resource for outreach events held by partners. The Coordinator works independently and as part of a team, and oversees multiple projects, sets deadlines and manages projects to completion. RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Develops and implements a communications plan that engages the public via print and digital media, social media, newsletters, blogs and other communications tools; manages APIPP’s website and social media accounts.
  • Establishes and builds cooperative relationships with local and regional partners. Assists partners with invasive species outreach and education programs by participating in field days, workshops, and webinars, and by tabling at events.
  • Coordinates APIPP’s education programs and events, including securing speakers, promoting events, and managing registration.
  • Provides logistical support for APIPP’s volunteer citizen-science programs in close coordination with APIPP’s subject matter experts.
  • Responds to requests for information about invasive species and/or directs queries to the appropriate team member or partner.
  • Develops educational and promotional material to support outreach goals.
  • Integrates closely with other employees and partners and manages multiple projects with deadlines.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements, and helps prepare reports to comply with contract and grant requirements.
  • Occasionally works long days or attends events in the evening or on weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience communicating in English via written, spoken and graphical means, and experience communicating technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience developing, proofreading and editing messages for print publications and digital and social media.
  • Experience managing websites.  
  • Experience using software applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs.          
  • Experience in project management, and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with accuracy, on time, in coordination with a team of colleagues.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in communications or related field, five years of experience working in communications and outreach, or a combination of education and experience.  
  • Experience developing and implementing program-wide communications plans.
  • Experience coordinating and implementing outreach events for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Relationship building skills and experience working closely with a variety of partners.
  • Knowledge of invasive species and reporting tools such as iMapInvasives.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
