In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, MobilizeGreen is seeking 4 Crew Leaders for its residential Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program for the summer of 2022. MobilizeGreen's Forest Service YCC program includes a three-week residential program for diverse young people between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age, with a recruitment focus on Tribal Youth in the Great Lakes area. Housed in dorms at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Minnesota, nestled in the woods off the shores of Lake Superior, crew members and leaders will build a community while living and working together as a team.
Crew Leaders will lead teams of high-school students working on conservation projects in the Superior National Forest during the day and participate in environmental education, professional development, and outdoor recreation activities during the evenings and weekends. The goal of the program is to create environmental stewards and future leaders through community engagement, physical labor, and teamwork. Crew Leaders work in collaboration with our U.S. Forest Service (USFS) partners in the region to manage student and group safety, personal development, camp life, environmental education, and trail projects. Additionally, Crew Leaders represent MobilizeGreen on-site and coordinate with the USFS staff on designated projects. Crew Leaders must attend the orientation and skills-based training session prior to the program. Program recruitment is targeted to attract youth and young adult leaders from diverse backgrounds, including socio-economically disadvantaged urban and rural communities.
Term: 5 weeks in total, June 6th- July 8th, includes pre/post-program admin
June 6th- June 10th training & prep
In the field with Crew Members: June 12th- July 2
July 5th- July 8th: program wrap up (July 4th off)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise Crew Members during all program activities and projects
- Provide an emotionally and physically safe environment in accordance with MobilizeGreen’s Field Operations Standards
- Work with other leaders to manage group dynamics of the crew
- Assist with Environmental Education and team-building lessons during evenings and on weekends
- Drive van with crew members to/from project site
- Train and supervise Crew Members in safe and proper use of tools and all aspects of the service project (may include trail construction, maintenance, wildlife habitat work, site restoration, etc.)
Requirements During Term of Service:
- Uphold and act in accordance with MobilizeGreen’s Field Operations Standards.
- Communicate effectively with MobilizeGreen staff, parents, agency partners, and coleader during program.
- Participate fully in Crew Leader Orientation and any safety trainings.
- Maintain positive relationship with agency partners.
- Provide emotionally and physically safe environment for members.
- Maintain a positive, professional relationship with other Crew Leaders.
- Complete all necessary weekly and post-program paperwork, including an end of program debrief with MobilizeGreen Staff.
Desired Skills:
- Positive attitude, sense of humor and ability to adapt to new situations
- Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and experience working with diverse populations
- Youth/Young Adult Programming- Documented experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18) as a teacher, mentor, leader, counselor or coach.
- Teaching/Leadership: Experience working in an informal or formal educational environment or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to organize and effectively teach lessons, motivate teenage and/or young adult students, provide and accept constructive feedback and communicate effectively.
- Outdoor Education/Skills: Experience/familiarity with outdoor skills, including: hiking, safety awareness, Leave No Trace, etc.
- Conservation Project Skills: Experience in service project management, service learning, conservation, or trail/conservation projects and hand tool use. May also include experience with carpentry, landscaping, gardening, etc.
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 by May 1, 2022
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with no major violations within the past 3 years.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Must be comfortable driving a minivan in a rural environment.
- Current Wilderness First Aid/CPR Certification, or ability to obtain by start date
- Covid vaccines required.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This is physically demanding work. The work conditions are challenging and require the ability to handle strenuous work conditions, such as steep terrain, as well as environmental conditions, including rain and extreme heat. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Crew Leaders will be expected to stand, walk, and carry gear for up to 8 hours per day while keeping morale up among members.
Positions will be filled on a rolling basis.
You will be based out of Finland, Minnesota. Travel to and from site will be covered as well as food and lodging.
