Education Interns
SUMMER SEASON: June 5 - August 20
Interns receive rustic housing for the entirety of their contracted employment and meals are provided when on Hurricane island.
The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership (Hurricane Island) is seeking Education Interns (hereafter referred to as Interns) for the 2022 season. The position requires living and working on Hurricane Island. The interns work closely with the Director of Education, Education Manager, and their mentor Educator to help implement delivery of Hurricane Island’s hands-on, experiential science and leadership education programs. Interns will be supported to take on increasing responsibility and ownership of program delivery over the course of the internship and will be mentored in this process by an experienced Educator and the Director of Education. Throughout this experience, Interns will develop skills to effectively manage middle and high school student groups, create place-based learning plans, facilitate field-research studies, and gain knowledge about Hurricane Island’s innovative sustainable systems and practice, including sea vegetable and shellfish aquaculture. Interns are expected to be integrated into the day-to-day operations of the island and help Hurricane maintain our collaborative and intentional community. A successful candidate must be well-organized, flexible, and able to function in a dynamic working environment. Additional responsibilities to those described here may be required, as needed.
Responsibilities & Expectations
Collaborate with their mentor Educator and Hurricane Island staff to deliver learning opportunities that align with Hurricane Island teaching philosophies, program goals, and student needs including, but not limited to:
- Facilitating place-based, student driven learning experiences within a culturally responsive, inclusive learning community;
- Creating and leading evening programs with student participants;
- Managing group dynamics, leading team building exercises/games, and facilitating participant comfort in outdoor settings.
Practice care for student health and wellness including, but not limited to:
- Regular overnight supervision in student housing with a partner;
- Managing student physical, social, and emotional safety in outdoor settings;
- Safeguarding student health needs and confidentiality according to existing medical records and emergent conditions
Maintain a growth mindset and actively participate in personal improvement through weekly reflections on best practices in teaching and learning with other education staff members;
Assisting with implementation of Hurricane Island and student-led field research projects.
Participate as a full member of Hurricane’s intentional community, including following and enforcing campus policies and community expectations, welcoming visitors to the island and communicating about Hurricane’s mission and work, participating in community tasks including daily and weekly chores, performing other duties relating to the organization’s goals and mission as required.
